Bike Packing Fork Bags: Essential Gear for Your Adventure

Bike Packing Fork Bags

Bikepacking is an exhilarating way to explore the outdoors, offering the freedom to travel across diverse landscapes. As an avid backpacker, I’ve found that packing styles and gear choices significantly influence the overall experience. Some trips demand more gear than a typical three-bag setup, which usually includes a seat pack, frame bag, and handlebar roll. On particularly challenging routes, requiring extra water, food, or special equipment for sub-freezing temps, it’s essential to think beyond the conventional setups.

One groundbreaking innovation in the bikepacking world came from Salsa Cycles with their original Anything Cage. This oversized, open-sided cage made of lightweight aluminum tubing was designed to stow items that are significantly larger than a standard water bottle. This concept was quite revolutionary, enabling the creation of what we now call cargo cages. Today, bag-makers have developed packs that can be mounted directly onto eyelets on fork legs and downtubes, expanding the packing capacity of bikes and enhancing the flexibility of bike-packing setups.

For those embarking on expeditions in water-starved regions or areas with few resupply opportunities, using cargo cages or braze-on mounted bags can be a game-changer. This strategy not only increases your gear carrying capacity but also ensures that your bike handles better by distributing the weight evenly. It’s always a good idea to pack all your gear on the bike instead of on your back to maintain balance and comfort.

When selecting fork-mounted carriers or eyelet-mounted bags, it’s crucial to consider the specific demands of your trip. There is a complete list of Anything-style cargo cages, rackless, fork-mounted carrier systems, and eyelet-mounted bags available, each tested and approved with a hexagonal icon for reliability. If your fork or downtube lacks mounts, you can always add eyelets using various kits.

1. ATM Many Things Sack

  • CAGE mount BAG made of CORDURA with 3 EYELETS or a RACK for attachment
  • Volume of 3.5-4.0L, weight of 220 grams (or 7.8 oz)
  • Price: $170
  • Manufactured in Kansas, USA

The Andrew the Maker’s Many Things Sack is an elegant, lightweight bag specifically designed to mount on the King Cage Many Things Cage on your bike’s fork blade. Unlike traditional, larger bags, these nano panniers have a slimmer profile, which means they don’t cause the usual adverse effect on steering. This makes them perfect for threading through singletrack without any hassle. Plus, they offer easy access, making them an excellent option for embarking on longer bike tours where practicality is key and counting grams is less of a concern.

Before you set off, make sure to check that the current version of the Many Things Sack is compatible with your setup. These bags are a top choice for those who prioritize both functionality and simplicity. For more details, read our full review and see the latest version to ensure it meets your needs.

2. Bedrock Honaker

  • SOFT WATER BOTTLE CAGE made of X-PAC, RHINOTEC, and CORDURA
  • Attaches with VELCRO STRAPS
  • Fits NALGENE 32OZ bottles
  • Weight: 77 grams (or 2.7 oz)
  • Price: $55
  • Manufactured in Colorado, USA

The Bedrock’s Honaker Hydro Pack is a versatile bag designed for bikepackers who need reliable water storage solutions. This bag is perfect for carrying a 1L Nalgene bottle, and it mounts securely to your bike’s down tube. Made to fit various bikes, it addresses the common problem of limited water hauling capacity by utilizing the often-overlooked underside of the down tube. This is a great area for mounting as it keeps the center of gravity low and avoids interference with the terrain or other obstacles.

The Honaker Hydro Pack features a strip of Velcro sewn vertically and an adhesive backed strip to provide extra support and prevent the bag from rotating or sliding. The main straps have a rubberized backing material for a more secure anchor point. The spindrift collar helps keep the bottle clean, which is particularly useful when riding in dusty or cattle country conditions. Originally designed for a standard 700-800ml water bottle, it has been updated to fit the larger Nalgene. In our tests with the Zefal 1L Magnum, the Honaker performed exceptionally well.

During our trip in southern Spain, we mounted the Honaker to a Marin Pine Mountain bike. Despite the rough terrain, the bag worked flawlessly. One minor complaint was the difficulty in getting the bottle in and out without undoing the straps a bit, but this is a minor inconvenience considering its overall utility. For bikepacking adventures, using the Honaker as storage for a backup bottle at camp is a perfect solution.

Overall, the Honaker Hydro Pack is a ruggedly built product that excels in its purpose. It’s ideal for bikes without down tube mounts, offering a practical and effective way to carry water on challenging trips. The bag is well designed, ensuring your bottle stays secure and clean, making it a top choice for any serious bikepacker.

  • MINI CARGO CAGE made of COMPOSITE PLASTIC
  • Attaches with 2 BOLTS or VOILE STRAPS
  • Weight: 25 grams (or 0.9 oz)
  • Price: £23

The drj0n bagworks Strap Deck is a versatile solution for bike packing. It mounts to a standard pair of bottle cage bosses with two M5 bolts, or you can use extra straps to attach it almost anywhere on your bike. The Strap Deck has four pairs of strap slots designed for standard Voile straps. This allows two pairs to strap to the bike and two to secure the attached cargo. The bolt holes offer some adjustability, and the cages are offset to one end, either up or down, making it flexible for different setups. For the bolt mounts, lighter items up to 1 lb 13 oz (or 820g) are recommended.

I’ve used the Strap Deck extensively while scouting sections of the Eastern Divide Trail. It’s been great for lashing a small bag like the Wolf Tooth Teklite Roll-Top Bag (0.6L), which holds a spare tube, sealant, and tire repair tools. I’ve also used it to lash a beer and other small items. This setup has proven to be very efficient, as I’ve had no issues with it. The Strap Deck is small, light, and unobtrusive when not in use, which is a significant advantage for long rides.

The Strap Deck has become an essential part of my gear for bikepacking. Its adjustability and ease of use make it perfect for carrying various items without compromising the bike’s balance. Whether you’re on a rugged trail or a smooth path, the Strap Deck ensures your gear is secure and accessible.

5. Framework Designs Travellers Panniers

  • Fork Mounted Bag made from waterproof canvas and aluminum
  • Attaches with 3 bolts or straps
  • Volume: 4.5L
  • Weight: 485 grams (or 17.1 oz)
  • Price: $249AUD per pair
  • Manufactured in Melbourne, Australia

Framework Designs’ Travellers Panniers are constructed with an Australian-made waterproof canvas exterior and a lightweight waterproof lining. They feature an aluminium backing that allows them to bolt directly to your fork. Unlike the smaller Pint Sized Panniers, these can also be strapped onto a front or rear rack thanks to the crosshatch of webbing on the backside. Each pannier can hold up to 4.5L and uses a simple roll-top closure with an aluminum g-hook buckle.

I’ve found these panniers to be incredibly durable and practical. The waterproof materials ensure your gear stays dry, and the ability to attach them to different parts of the bike makes them very versatile. Whether I’m on a short trip or a long journey, the Travellers Panniers provide the storage and convenience I need.

6. King Cage Manything Cage

  • CARGO CAGE made of TITANIUM for durability
  • Attaches with 3 BOSSES for a secure fit
  • Weight: 39 grams (or 1.4 oz)
  • Price: $66
  • Manufactured in Colorado, USA

The Manything Cage was highly anticipated before its release. After the first wave of Salsa Anything Cages had some issues in 2011, rumors about the Manything Cage started circulating. Ron, the founder and owner of King Cage, said their variation on an oversized cage needed more testing and tweaking to perfect the design. Since then, several comparable cages have entered the market, such as the Anything Cage HD and Blackburn’s Cargo Cage. However, the new Manything is the only titanium option available now.

This product is simple and incredibly lightweight. We have tested it over countless miles and highly recommend it. The Manything Cage stands out for its durability and performance, making it a top choice for serious bikepackers. If you’re looking for a reliable and efficient cage for your adventures, the Manything is an excellent option.

7. Ortlieb Fork-Pack

  • FORK-MOUNTED BAG made of PVC-FREE NYLON
  • Attaches with 3 BOLTS or STRAPS
  • VOLUME: 4.1-5.8L
  • Weight: 290 grams (or 10.2 oz)
  • Price: $60
  • Manufactured in Germany

The Ortlieb Fork-Pack is a different kind of cargo bag or micro-pannier in the market. Weighing just 264 grams, it includes a mounting adapter. In typical Ortlieb fashion, the Fork-Pack features a welded, roll-top design that is completely waterproof, offering over four liters of storage. What sets it apart is its unique quick-release adapter and mounting plate that can be attached to forks with eyelets as well as to those without.

8. Outer Shell Pico Panniers

  • FORK-MOUNTED BAG made of PVC-FREE NYLON
  • Attaches with 3 BOLTS or STRAPS
  • VOLUME: 4.1-5.8L
  • Weight: 290 grams (or 10.2 oz)
  • Price: $60
  • Manufactured in Germany

The Outer Shell Pico Panniers have a clever and unique design that offers fork-mounted storage for any bike. They come with two sets of external polycarbonate frames. One set is designed for forks with two or three bosses, while the other is for forks without bosses, including suspension forks. The frame acts as a rigid back for the Pico Pannier and provides a sturdy mounting option that eliminates movement when riding rough trails. Once the correct frame is installed, the Pico Pannier slides over the top and secures around the frame and fork leg with a beefy strip of velcro.

The bag features two compartments: an exterior pocket with a small buckle for easy access to tools or snacks, and a primary compartment with a roll-top closure and slide-release buckle. The Pico Panniers are incredibly stable and slender, making them perfect for singletrack riding. They are well built and great looking, working as intended.

I found the Pico Panniers worked best when packed snuggly with relatively soft contents like extra layers, a sleeping pad, or some food. They are stable, even on rough trails, and offer ample storage without being bulky. The design ensures that they are secure and do not move around, which is crucial for maintaining balance while riding.

9. Oveja Negra Bootlegger

  • FORK MOUNT BAG made of X-PAC or CORDURA with ALUMINUM
  • Attaches with 3-PACK BOSSES
  • VOLUME: 2L EACH
  • Weight: 170 grams (or 6 oz)
  • Price: $80
  • Place of Manufacture: Colorado, USA

The Oveja Negra Bootlegger is a well-crafted roll-top bag that attaches to the fork. It is built around an internal lightweight aluminum alloy frame that bolts directly to standard three-pack water bottle fork mounts. The bag has three layers of construction: an exterior made of X-Pac or Cordura, a layer of lightweight foam padding, and an interior made of brightly colored nylon fabric. Additionally, there is a layer of Hypalon where the alloy frame is sandwiched in place.

The cylindrical interior fits a 32 oz Nalgene bottle, a 40 oz wide Klean Kanteen, or an assortment of gear totaling two liters. The bag features urethane-coated webbing for increased durability, a reflective logo, and includes stainless steel washers for a secure installation. Having tested it on the Baja Divide and Arrowhead 135, we can vouch for its durability.

This bag is perfect for carrying your essential items while ensuring they stay safe and secure. The well-crafted design and multiple layers provide excellent protection and stability, making the Oveja Negra Bootlegger an ideal choice for any bikepacking adventure.

10. Problem Solvers Bow Tie Strap Anchors

  • CARGO MOUNT made of ALUMINUM
  • Attaches with 2 BOSSES or BOLTS
  • Weight: 20 grams (or 0.7 oz)
  • Price: $18
  • Manufactured in Taiwan
  • Available at Jenson and Campfire Cycling

The Problem Solvers Bow Tie Strap Anchors are simple, lightweight brackets made of stamped AL-6061 aluminum. Each one attaches to a single water bottle boss and serves as an anchor for cargo straps. Together, they have a 3lb weight limit and can carry just about anything, from sleeping pads and Nalgene bottles to a bottle of wine. Their low profile makes them unobtrusive when not in use.

I have used a pair of these anchors quite a bit over the last few years, strapping on a fishing pole, camp chair, and a JetBoil. They work well, although I wouldn’t recommend putting a large water bottle on them. The only tricky part I’ve noticed is that they tend to move around when you’re trying to tighten them.

11. Randi Jo Fabrications Big M.U.T.

  • ANYTHING BAG made of WAXED CANVAS
  • ATTACHMENT: ANYTHING CAGE
  • VOLUME: 5L EACH
  • Price: $65
  • Place of Manufacture: Oregon, USA

The Big M.U.T. is a larger version of the Multi Use Tote, designed for use with Salsa’s Anything Cage or Blackburn’s Outpost Cage. Like all of Randi Jo’s lovingly crafted gear, the Big M.U.T. is made from waxed canvas with a lightly padded liner to give it shape. It features a roll-top buckle closure for easy access. In terms of proportion, the Big M.U.T. measures 14″ (35.5cm) tall when opened, 4.75″ (12cm) wide, and 3.75″ (9.5cm) deep.

The Big M.U.T. is equipped with two generously long velcro straps that feed through the cage and wrap securely around the fork blades. The height can be adjusted using the daisy chain webbing. While waxed cotton isn’t 100% waterproof, it’s resistant enough to handle all but the heaviest downpours. This material is also extremely durable and can be easily repaired if you or your bike take a spill.

I’ve found the Big M.U.T. to be a reliable addition to my bikepacking setup. Its size is perfect for carrying extra layers, tools, or snacks. The secure fit ensures that it stays in place even on rough trails, and the durable construction means it can withstand the rigors of long rides.

12. Revelate Designs Joey Downtube Bag

  • CARGO BAG made of X-PAC
  • Attaches with VELCRO STRAPS
  • VOLUME: 2L
  • Weight: 130 grams (or 4.6 oz)
  • Price: $75
  • Place of Manufacture: Oregon, USA

The Revelate Designs Joey is a versatile bag that attaches under the down tube of any bicycle, just above the bottom bracket. It uses two velcro straps to attach, making it a viable solution for adding gear or water storage capacity to bikes without mounts in that position. The layer of stiff foam on the back of the bag provides structure and padding when it’s strapped to the downtube, while the grippy rubber material and its shape help it hug cylindrical tubing.

The Joey is constructed from VX21 X-Pac and features a standard roll-top closure to avoid dealing with dirt-covered zippers. The compression-molded dual-density foam used in the contact panel gives the right amount of structure to the bag, and the rubberized outer material along with the silicon-coated straps do an excellent job of keeping it in place. This bag is an ideal solution for bikes without bottle mounts under the downtube.

I’ve found the Joey to be a nicely designed solution for adding storage for either gear or water. Its sturdy construction and secure fit make it reliable for any adventure. The Joey‘s ability to stay in place even on rough terrain is impressive, making it a top choice for serious bikepackers.

13. Revelate Designs Polecat

  • CARGO CAGE BAG made of 210 DENIER RIPSTOP NYLON
  • REQUIRES CARGO CAGE for attachment
  • VOLUME: 3.5L
  • Weight: 105 grams (or 3.7 oz)
  • Price: $44
  • Place of Manufacture: China

The Revelate Designs Polecat is a waterproof drybag specifically designed to work with a fork mounted cargo cage. Made from radio-frequency welded 210 Denier Ripstop Nylon, it is double side laminated with TPU. It is one of the lightest Anything-style bags, being significantly lighter than the Salsa Anything bag. The base of the bag has a contoured low profile which eliminates high wear spots at the outer edge. The back is reinforced with urethane Hypalon to protect it from bolt heads and abrasion from the cage. Additionally, the reinforced base and outer edges help protect against abrasion common during long distance touring and bikepacking.

The Polyket consists of a daisy chain coated with urethane, designed to loop webbing strips or vile straps. We’ve only lightly used the Polecat on a week-long trip in Ethiopia, but it performed well. The Polecat fits fork mounted racks like the King Cage Many Things Cage, Salsa Anything Cage, and Blackburn Outpost.

14. Rogue Panda Oracle Downtube Bag

  • DOWNTUBE BAG made of X-PAC
  • Attaches with 2 STRAPS
  • VOLUME: 1.5L
  • Weight: 85 grams (or 3 oz)
  • Price: $75
  • Place of Manufacture: USA

The Oracle Downtube Bag from Rogue Panda is designed to fit on the bottom of your down tube, having the least effect on the bike’s handling while providing 1.5L of storage for tools, spares, and other dense items. The Oracle uses non-slip fabric and a roll-top closure with two compression straps to hold everything in place, even on the most rowdy trails.

In my experience, the Oracle is the perfect cubby hole for stashing my tool pouch, spares, a bottle of sealant, a blinkie, and whatever emergency snacks I can jam in there. The inclusion of straps that cinch tight and lock down works really well, especially when running the Oracle higher on the downtube to ensure there’s room between the bag and the tire. The ease of access with the roll-top design is excellent. After hundreds of miles of use, the Oracle has proved hardy, and under the patina of dirt and dust, it still looks good as new.

15. Salsa Anything Cage (v2)

  • TYPE: CARGO CAGE
  • Made of ALUMINUM
  • ATTACHMENT: 3 BOSSES/BOLTS
  • Weight: 143 grams (or 5 oz)
  • Price: $30
  • Place of Manufacture: Taiwan
  • Available at Jenson and REI

While riding in Africa, we broke two of the original Anything Cages. One of them was welded in Lesotho, but it broke again and was eventually discontinued. Fast forward a few years, and Salsa released the V2. This version is quite tough and weighs 143g, making it no slouch in the weight department. Although it has a nearly identical rail design and shape to the original, the tubing is now welded to a solid plate.

The Anything Cage boasts a 6.6 lb (3 kg) limit, which is more than adequate for carrying a sleeping pad, rain gear, a Vargo BOT cook kit, a 64oz klean Kanteen, or any other cylindrical object you decide to lash onto it. This makes it a versatile and reliable option for bike packers looking to carry extra gear on their trips.

16. Salsa Anything Cage HD

  • TYPE: CARGO CAGE
  • Made of INJECTION MOLDED PLASTIC
  • ATTACHMENT: 3 BOSSES/BOLTS
  • Weight: 149 grams (or 5.3 oz)
  • Price: $35
  • Place of Manufacture: China

The Salsa Anything Cage HD is an upgrade from the original Anything Cage. This Heavy Duty version is designed to be mounted on Salsa’s Three Pack Bosses with a three-hole mount configuration. It fits on forks like those found on the Fargo, Mukluk, and several Surly bikes. The HD is made from a hefty chunk of injection molded impact resistant nylon.

After countless miles in Africa, South America, and beyond, the Salsa Anything Cage HD has proven to be reliable and crashproof. Its shallow elliptical design reduces exposure to trailside foliage and rocks. The back of the cage has a channel that contacts the tubing with rounded edges, feeling extremely solid when bolted to the fork. The cage weighs 149 grams and has a 6.6 lb (3 kg) cargo limit.

The Salsa Anything Cage HD also includes two Salsa straps. The strap channels are designed to route the straps through the cage and around the tubing to provide additional leverage. This makes it easier to secure your gear, ensuring it stays in place even on rough trails.

17. Salsa EXP Anything Cage Bag

  • TYPE: ANYTHING BAG
  • Made of 500 DENIER TARPAULIN
  • ATTACHMENT: ANYTHING CAGE
  • VOLUME: 3.35L EACH
  • Weight: 148 grams (or 5.2 oz)
  • Price: $37
  • Place of Manufacture: China
  • Available at Jenson

With the release of the Anything Cage HD, Salsa also debuted the Anything Bag. This roll-top bag is constructed from a burly, waterproof 500 Denier tarpaulin fabric with radio-frequency welded seams. It has a 3.35L internal capacity and a molded TPU base, which allows the bag to stand upright when off the bike. The Anything Bag measures 3.75” in diameter and 14” tall at max height, making it perfectly sized to interface with both models of the Anything cage.

The bag fits snugly in the HD cage, and the daisy chains are inline with the strap channels near the top and bottom bolt mounts. After years of abuse, we can confidently claim that the Anything Bag is certainly durable. This design ensures that the bag remains secure and stable during rides, providing reliable storage for all your biking adventures.

From our review, we noted that they roll up like burritos when not in use. The versatility of the cargo cage lets you carry bags in some scenarios or large water bottles in others. If a smaller size bag is preferred, it sits more inboard of the bike, and there’s less hardware to potentially fail.

With a range of three sizes and accompanying straps to suit varying weathers, Telfin’s Cargo Pack and Cargo Cage Combo is a thoughtfully designed and well-executed system to increase the carrying capacity of your full suspension, hardtail, or gravel bike.
